That was the most fun I have ever had driving a car. Perfect event! I thought the traffic was going to be heavy (I was in group 1 before the change) but an on the fly addition of a 3rd novice session really opened up the track and let you focus on your driving! That must have been a PITA logistically but it really came across smoothly and was VERY beneficial!!! Well done!
The morning 2 sessions were necessary, but a little wasted on me with brain overload and over driving the car. It all clicked on the afternoon sessions and I was MUCH faster because the instruction sunk in and my lines were right. It is a nirvana moment when your subconscious takes over and you just ride the smooth wave of good line joy lap after lap. Just focusing on being smooth and consistent...zen-like amusement that you're going faster while it seems to get easier. The checkered flag comes way too soon even though the video confirms 1 more lap per 20 minute session than last year in the Chevelle.
My instructor Damon Peak, who I can't say enough good things about, took me in his M3 race car on one of his advanced sessions and I am still in awe at the violence of a real race car. Their warm up laps felt as fast as the novice green flag laps. Acceleration was like a catapult launch, braking left my legs straight out and it felt like I was dangling from the harness (note to self, make harness TIGHT, not so-so firm) and doing all of this 10 feet from the car in front and back. It takes a couple of laps to get your brain adjusted to the pace of it. There is no coasting, just gas and brake. The brutal mosh-pit ballet of g-forces still has my neck aching today from trying to hold my head up in the turns. Amazing to be a part of, but I was very happy to again waltz with the Mini, which suddenly has pathetic brakes, power, seats, suspension, etc.
I can't thank Jan, Ed, Lynn, and the rest of the volunteers, corner workers and sponsors enough for the opportunity. When the next one comes around, do not hesitate to sign up. Bring a car, a chair, more than 3 big gatorades in a cooler and be prepared for the drive of your life!!!
