    OE Popup Headlight - opinions?

    The Rules:

    S. OE pop-up headlights may be replaced with static headlights,
provided the replacement units are intended for automotive use on
public roads as a primary means of illumination, and retain high and
low beams as originally provided by the manufacturer. All associated
hardware may be removed, replaced or modified.

I think this is a great rule that a lot of the competitors in SSM can make use of.  Miata, RX7, Corvette, MR2 everyone benefits.  I looked around for various options for the Miata.

I always strive to make sure my car is 100% legal  The solution I landed on replaced the turn signal lenses with clear ones and utilized a Sylvania 9007 bulb.  I thought I had all the bases covered,

    Static headlight - check

intended for automotive use on public roads as a primary means of illumination - check

retain high and low beams - check

I showed it to some local folks and they raised a concern that I had relocated the lights.  It never occurred to me this could be an issue.  I didn't even have to lengthen the wiring, just swap plugs.  It seemed to me that no matter what solution you used the lights would have to move some amount.  Anyway, the picture below shows what I did.  I haven't covered the original openings yet in case I have to take a different approach.  I am writing to the SEB tomorrow for clarification, but thought I would canvas this audience as well.

     Thanks for your time,

I don't know about the rules, but I'm curious where you found the kit for the conversion.

I think you'd be fine except that there isn't any allowance to remove or modify the parking light/turn signal housing.

If you cut a hole in the bumper (since you can use alternate bumper covers), and put a DOT headlight housing (a bulb in and of itself isn't necessarily a headlight) in that, I think you're ok.

In addition to the lack of an allowance to remove or modify the parking light/turn signal housing, I doubt that lens is intended for use as a primary means of illumination.

Edited to add: I believe DOT certification isn't required, allowing for JDM lighting systems, for example.  But the lens for primary illumination *does* control the light pattern for normal street use, and a turn signal light housing certainly won't do that.

This, of course, is merely my unofficial and personal speculation...

That's a creative solution, and I'm very interested to hear what the SEB has to say. As others have mentioned, the turn signal housing is not meant to provide "a primary means of illumination". I've been considering the following solution - mount one of these in the OEM headlight location with a clear plastric cover.
