    Best Way to Start Out

    Hey Everyone,

I'm new and I wanted to know the best way to get started in auto-x. I visited an event last year in the fall, but unfortunately didn't get the chance to try it out, but I want to this year! I am currently driving a 1996 Miata, so I know I am in good company. Would the best thing to do be to show up for the Auto-X School/Comp at Grissom? Or should I start with one of the other events? Thanks everyone!

    Drew

Re: Best Way to Start Out

The best thing to do is just show up and be ready to have fun driving.

As you probably know your car will have to go through a tech inspection. Things to double check include battery being securely fastened (with some kind of metal screwdown to ensure it can't move around), lugnuts are properly torqued, suspension doesn't allow wheels to wiggle, and clear out your car of all loose items... I think that is about it. You'll want your tires pumped up a lot - like 45psi (ask one of the many Miata guys what to put them at). The main thing is you want them higher than on the street so they don't rollover the sidewalls. You can borrow a helmet at the event.

Get there as early as possible so you have plenty of time to walk the course and get tips. There is usually a novice walkthrough to help out. Ask people questions - we are often not paying attention - but are always interested in helping newbies out, so get our attention. Bring food and lots of water and lots of clothing (jackets, umbrella, change of underwear, etc.) and sunblock.

As to which specific event to do first, I'd do the first one you can. The schools offered in Indy (http://www.indyscca.org) and Columbus (http://www.cscc-scca.org) will give you lots of runs and more tips for sure, but a regular event will be very worthwhile.

Don't worry about your performance or any competitive stuff early on. Just have more fun driving than you probably have ever had before. Your Miata is going to feel like a beast.

Is your Miata stock? Have you got any modifications - if so we can help you figure out what class your car will be in.

Welcome aboard! Be sure to check out http://www.indyscca.org for lots of information.

Jason, of all people...  I can't believe you didn't mention to bring painters tape to put clearly visable numbers on the side of the car.  Stick out tongue

Re: Best Way to Start Out

    Thanks guys,

I'll definitely check out Columbus, it is a little closer, though not much ;). I know I'm not going to be very competitive, I just want to try it out, maybe learn a thing or two. As for my car, it has no mods that I know of, I have fixed up some things, but for the most part it was OEM or equivalent. I do want to put a new steering wheel in, but I heard that will knock me into a new class. (I think that's silly, since it's a wood wheel that is the same diameter and weight as OEM, I just like it better....). Thanks again!

If you are in Bloomington, come to All Road Motorsports this Sunday at 5pm.  There is a new sports car club being formed called "Sports Car Club of IU".  It is an Indiana University student club for anyone interested in sports cars, autocrossing, racing, etc.  Several of the folks in the club participate in Indy and Columbus region SCCA events.  All Roads Motorsports is just off SR37 on the South West side of Bloomington.

    ^^^ That's awesome Ron!

Hey Drew, just come to an event. Even if it isn't an official "school". Tell someone you are new, and you will get a lot of tips.
Oh....and about silliness of the rules. We know. Just keep in mind the rules are written with the National level competitor in mind. Instead of totally re-writing them at the regional level, we may just add a class (like Street Mod Street tire -- SMS -- which is Street Mod rules but allow Street Touring tire allowances). But like everyone said, don't worry about that at first. If you are interested, just come on out and meet us.
