Is there a course map so those of us that were at Peru can see what your challenges were?

Re: July Solo "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS" Details Confimed

I probably shouldn't do this - but my brain to keyboard filter has been broken for a few years now so here goes

Was there anything going on in the Gateway lot prior to the event? Did Gateway say we couldn't get on site till 3pm (or whatever time setup started)?

If the answers to the previous questions were no, then this might sound a little rhetorical but I'm gonna say it anyway - We had access to the site for 12+ hours and only got 3 runs in? And this is how we are supposed to get more people interested in these events? Or get our newer drivers ready for bigger events?

If there were extenuating circumstances or regulations placed upon the region by Gateway - then sorry for bringing this up.

Re: July Solo "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS" Details Confimed

The only regulations for this event was the chairman (ME)- and now that you have opened this up - I appreciate your OFFERING TO RUN THE YEAR END CHALLENGE. You will be great it. I noticed how you so cleverly offered to do it better for that event and I for one KNOW YOU WILL REALLY DO IT GREAT! Big Smile

I chose (my Co-Chair went along with me) a 3PM open and a 5PM start to allow for a min. of 3 runs - and fun runs - we stopped a little after 11PM when we realized the "fireworks" we were seeing was actually lightening.  I really started out thinking we would have 50 people show up and get 4-5 runs - but then we got a whopping 78 - which meant we had to get it all done before dark - including a challenge. All this without some "core" members to help.  I chose not to even run, as I was too busy with announcing (we missed you on that very much Nick) and making sure watermelon was cut up, soda was cold and auction was moving along. (Thanks to John, April, Carla, Dave, etc)

In hindsight,  might have said to start earlier, but we had the course set up crew there at 1pm - with many of us right behind them.  I waited for the last competitor to finish getting their tires changed and left GIR at close to midnight.  Lynn was right there with me so he and I were there for almost 12 hours.

Nick, I really agree it might have been fun to start much earlier and run a real marathon, but it was along long day and hated to tax the organizers for many more hours.  Loading that trailer at 11PM was hard, and thanks for the 10-12 people who picked up and pitched the cones in or they might still be on the lot.

Not trying to be a smart a** - (any more than I think you were) but that was a long day, not including the time it took to get ready for it.

Nick, I am serious, please do follow through with chairing the year end event - you will make it fun for all, I know you will.

Re: July Solo "OH SAY CAN YOU SEE - SOLO FOR NICHOLAS" Details Confimed

There is a course map which bears no relationaship at all to what was actually set up.  Four of us (only two of the regular setup crew) started setting up the course at 1.  After it was set up, more than 60% of it was changed due to complaints of it being to confusing.  Considering the number of newbies, it probably was.  I wasn't expecting that many and designed something very different for our more experienced people.  And no, getting there earlier wasn't an option since I worked until almost 7AM Saturday morning.

The decision to have 3 runs was made well before we went out to set up the course.  It was made by the chairmen when they made decided to have the index challenge.

The SAC has decided that it is not our responsibility to prepare people for bigger events.  Mainly because so few of us are interested in higher level compeition.  Our entrants want to make a lot of runs at our events so that is what we give them.  However, since this was a non-points event and we all seemed to want had requests from members to have an index challenge, we had 3 runs.

    Sweet!

The Year End Challenge event will now be on July 26th! Come take as many runs as you like for $2 apiece.

We will set up workers the morning of and run 45min long sessions with a break for lunch at 11AM. First car off at 8:00AM.

No results will be tallied but times will be listed via Master Log at the end of each session.

Oops - few things you can't change unless the SAC approves - like the date Big Smile but that format can be OK for the correct date of Oct. 25.  I already added you on the 2009 schedule.

To answer Andy's question, the only thing challenging about this course is that it wasn't our usual road race course.  It was probably .1 to .2 mile shorter than most of our courses, but 6 to 8 seconds longer.

The course start with a 90 to right towards the light pole.  There was a lane change, a 180 to the left, then a softer lane change.  Then a 90 right to a very short straight followed by two closes gates.  The second closed gate was a 30 left immediatley into about a really tight 90 right to an optional three cone slalom.  Then about a 60 left with a short straight to a 150 right.  Then a gate offset to the left.  Next a 70 or so right around the first cone of a non-optional 3 cone.  At the end of the slalom was a tight flick to the left followed by about a 100 sweeper to a straight then a hard 90+ to a gate then three more offsets heading towards the speaker tower.  Next was a 40 left followed by a hard 90 left, a short straight to a hard 90 right.  Then a short straight to the finish.

I really don't think the course was anything one wouldn't expect to see at Little Rock, Louisville or many other regions.  As a matter of fact, at the last Louisville event, the S2000's had to downshift to first 7 times.  I am not aware that anyone was downshifting to first.

The funny part is that I thought the course would be a Miata, Civic course and way too tight for the Subarus, but we ended up 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th.

I'm assuming our usual start/finish location when I'm drawing this on a lot map, is that correct?

Pretty close.  It was closer to the fence than usual.

I haven't agreed to anything yet - since its after Nationals, I have very little interest in racing that time of year. We'll see.

Great events take lots of planning - you can be thinking of all the great things you can do with that event form now until then.  Big Smile

oops - I sorta lost my brain to kepboard ability to remember how to delete your name from the column called Event Chairman for that event Smile

I heard some people downshifting as I was working Heat 1 so I was a little worried I'd be bogging around in 2nd gear but the course was plenty fast enough - stayed in boost all through 2nd gear fine.

I really enjoyed this event - I don't get to come out to Sunday events these days due to scheduling so I really appreciate the special event that you all put on.  I would continue to enjoy events like this in the future, and yes that means if you are doing a Saturday event and need a volunteer (even if it's something like keeping soda cool) let me know!
