I still think the "going home and over analyzing" is useful though.

I think another plus that no one's mentioned is how easy it is to put it into other peoples cars.  At a local event, if a fast guy keeps beating you every event, you can record his run and your run and compare what he's doing different.

I thought that MaxQ GPS module comes with the magnetic bottom so it stays on the car by it self without a need to secure it additionally with something else. I do have another module which is just like I described it above, so maybe that is why I am mistaken...

The orignal MQGPS did have a magnetic bottom.  But the new version doesn't.  Instead it has a piece of no-slip material glued to the bottom.  It works well to keep it sitting on your dash for around town use.  But one hard turn and it will let go (make sure you're side windows are rolled up!).   I stuck velcro on the bottom of mine, but the adhesive doesn't want to stick to the no-slip material.  I'm trying to decide whether to pull it off or not.

Yup.  Its also really easy to hide in a competitors car to see why he's beating you. Devil

Wait...did I just say that?  Nevermind... Wink

I agree with Kevin that the between run thing gives the advantage to MaxQ over DL1.

I guess you guys need to work on a decent screen layout for you DL1 then.  I have no problem using a DL1 between runs to analyze data and find where I lost time.  The first run takes about an extra 5 min to set start and finish, but after that, it's a 30 second affair to get your run in and ready to look at data.

    Re: Which MaxQData for autocross?

I have to agree with Steve...especially after he showed me *his* setup for the DL-1.  The trick here is to take some run data back home after and event.  Sit down with it and set everything up to compare stuff like you want.  Put the most important stuff on the first "tab" in an easy-to-use fashion.  Put everything else on more tabs.  Then save that as a "template."  It won't save any run data, it will just save your current setup.  Then make that your default template.  After that, it's only a couple quick clicks to load your runs and see everything.

That said, I do admit that having to plop a CF card back and forth isn't quite as easy as just grabbing your PDA.  But you have to worry about having a PDA, having it setup, and live with the smaller interface, too.  Obviously the other way you have to have an entire laptop, but at least it doesn't have to be in the car.  Both have definite tradeoffs.

Personally, I don't like looking at data between runs at an event like a Tour.  I could see where it could help, and if you have the right mindset for it, great.  For some reason I'm not comfortable bothering.  I like to decompress and that seems to help me more than seeing something on data.  However, I do really like being able to look at data after a first day of a Tour or between run groups of a ProSolo.

Now if Ed *really* wanted to win some hearts he'd make a filter in his software to import DL-1 data easily and then sell that to those of us with DL-1's (assuming it is better...given Race Technology's current commitment to autocross that may not be hard to do!).  We might be willing to convert then.  But right now there's no way I'd buy a different system...the DL-1's software isn't simple, but it is very powerful and once you get the hang of it isn't bad.  But there's a lot of stuff that could get in the way of someone who really just wants to analyze and compare two autocross runs on the same course.

The MAXQDATA system also works on your laptop. You can use bluetooth to transfer the data from your pda. It also works on your home PC computer.

Don't get me wrong the DL1 is an awesome system, it trounces the MaxQ as far as customizing the templates and the total data manipulation. For me I like the MaxQ I use it to win at the event in the moment and for most folks it is simple enough to do this quickly. Also remember Ed is working to make it even better for autocrossing with free software updates. i don't think race technologies has the same commitment.

So don't get me wrong, its great that there are so many great data systems now. They used to cost $10,000 not that many years ago for the same power.

This is all excellent information, and I think it's encouraged me to buy one for myself.  As I do not have a palm pilot though, would it be an issue hooking it up to a laptop?  Thanks!

The reason I am not going that way is how bulky notebooks are... in comparison to a handheld.  I ended up buying a good used ipaq and going to use it for many purposes.... MaxQData, TomTom GPS, picture viewer, general organizer. :-)

Now the question will be... am I going to be able to understand all the data to help me improve my runs.

    Re: Which MaxQData for autocross?

My other option was looking for a used handheld, just trying to save the money to use for other items. ;)

More than anything I was curious of how much of an issue it would be, other than the slight inconvenience of the setup.  My idea was to set the MaxQ in the rear deck and setup a way to hold down the computer in the floor or something so that it doesn't move.  My assumption is (without fully reading everything) that you have to have the handheld or computer in the car hooked up to the MaxQ to get the data.  Makes sense, hence the reason I am assuming that. :D

    Re: Which MaxQData for autocross?

Anyone got an idea here? I just got my MaxQ and Pocket PC yesterday.  I connected just fine on my way to work this morning. I discovered my speedometer to be pretty spot on. I tried on the way home and got NOTHING.

I have went thru the setup 10 times and its just like the manual states.

Im using a Dell Axim X51
    MaxQData GPS

I start flight and the yellow light on the MaxQ blinks. No data is displayed on the Dell.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Which MaxQData for autocross?

I'm having the same problems.  Are you using the new MQGPS or old version?   I'm using a Dell X51v (very similar to yours).  My "solution" is to start Flight recording for about 10 seconds and then stop it.  After the spinning pizza stops, I usually start getting data from the MQGPS.

But I'd recommend posting your question(s) on the MaxQData Forum.  Ed checks those about every 2-days or sooner.

    Re: Which MaxQData for autocross?

I try to stay on top of this forum as well... ;)

It's odd, because I tested the MQGPS + Dell Axim X51 all this past weekend at an autocross and never once ran into this problem.  I am still looking into it.  In the meantime, thanks Mitch for your workaround.
