    Siezed up a briggs raptor

So what is the best solution.  Pulled the motor a part discovered a melted rod bearing.  Must learn how to check oil better.

fix it. (blueprinted Raptor) that was pretty fast.     or buy another one Raptor,    upgrade to Animal, or world formula,    or go to a KT-100   or Komer 80.

This is in an FJB Kart is my 9 yr old son doing very well in his 1st year of  Autocross Karts.  we have been through 6 gallons of Methanol this year.  and having a blast.

Hey Joe, When Stefan was running a raptor it was a constant worry that he would brake a rod or seize a piston. He did both at NPR kart races. Because of the worry of over reving (and safety reasons) we slowed down the autox courses at Burton by adding special green cone gates for Jr. kart runs. Now the courses at Burton are so slow they don't do that (ha). In answer to your question I would go with the world formula because of the rev. limiter if for no other reason. I think thats what Narby is using. Oh, when the rod went through the block at NPR it landed about 250 feet away in the paddock after flying inches away from Stefans elbow. Chuck

Hmmm... for the cost of two blueprinted Raptors you could have had a much more reliable and tractable WF.  At this time, the Animal is not legal in SCCA FJ classes.  The Yamaha makes sense, although some find tuning a challenge, and the Comer is not "upgradable" when your son hits FJA age.  For FJB the WF runs an intake restrictor, pop it out and presto! FJA!  Yamaha engines run specific carb/exhaust combinations for the classes.  Then, there is always the "MicroMax" and "MiniMax" versions of the Rotax.....

Either the WF or KT100 make sense to me.  Alan, has anyone really made the WF competitive with the Yamaha?  The ones I've seen can come close but always seem a step behind.  This only matters if down the road he'll be running with the best kids and wants to win.  If it a local only goal, either one will provide tons of fun and great driving experience.

Might have a line on a KT-100 (still attached to a Kart) Wink

WF motors are pretty freaking expensive.

Patching up the Raptor and it will be back on the track by maybe next week.    New rod and crank polish.  Lucky ME .    It is faster than my son so it'll do fer now.

If I get another Kart I wil be sleeping with it so it better be nice.   Figured I can save hours off the XP car at local events and still be able to scare the snot out of myself.      These Karts are fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Jeff,

On a National stage, that has yet to be truely tested.  My oldest managed a WF win a couple of years ago against some of the hottest CenDiv (now GLDiv) KT-100 drivers, his first victory in the class.  Last year he took the season off, but is back driving it again for 2009.  We'll see how it stacks up at the Toledo Pro.  I actually broke down and bought him new tires a week ago.  From my perspective, the WF should be able to get the job done, but who knows?  At least he is using it.  I think part of the incentive is that I have put a seat in the kart that I can fit into (a little loose for him, but height-wise good) and ran it myself at track-practice days.  Wink
