IMPORTANT: Team Pan Am Club Racers and Solo Racers........

This past weekend June 20th, and 21st, the Chicago SCCA Region held their annual June Sprints race at Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wi.  This is considered a "major" SCCA event.

While many racers recorded victories and had a great time, an SCCA tragedy occured and an SCCA Club Racer was killed in the E Production race while driving a Madza RX-7, at the young age of 48.

Whether we are club racers or solo racers, SAFETY always needs to be the number 1 issue when on the track.

While some racers/drivers may feel that rules for safety may not mean alot, the incident over the weekend shows that this can be a dangerous sport.

As racers/drivers we all need to step back a little and abide by all safety standards and rules that the SCCA has put in place.

It's a great sport and we as drivers/racers get lots of satisfaction and fun from what we like to do, but we also need to understand the potential hazards and potential injuries that one can face in what we do.

The next time "safety standards and rules" are discussed at a race or drivers meeting be sure to listen up. It's for your own benefit and safety.

So the next time "safety issues or rules" are mentioned, please understand they are there for a reason. One death, is one too many, especially in amatuer racing.

Re: IMPORTANT: Team Pan Am Club Racers and Solo Racers........

A tragic incident indeed......I have not heard of any specific safety issues with Tom's car or personnel safety equipment, but hopefully if there were any we will be informed so we can be extra vigilant for them. There was another incident at the Sprints involving a SSC Honda Civic that the driver walked away from........90 mph contact with the wall in the backstraight kink that caused broken trans and engine mounts in addition to the body damage and the driver is very sore!!

Those who have observed my road race techs know my main emphasis is safety and related equipment.....however I cannot easily check the condition of brake rotors (one fractured on the SSC Civic) and recently at MidOhio an SSB Civic had a brake hose failure at the end of the backstraight. These are all maintenance items that must be checked by racers frequently and if any doubt about condition exists changed immediately.......that said the high speed tracks like Road America are a blast to drive but also notoriously hard on equipment, especially brakes.

RIP Tom Thrash and may your family find comfort in your many accomplishments prior to this tragedy.
