    How difficult is it to obtain good 12a engines for a first gen RX-7 versus an engine for a first gen Miata?

    good used Miata engines are a dime a dozen. Good used 12As are rare.

    I agree...  The B6-ZE (1.6L) engines are really cheap and can be bought from a lot of people upgrading to a BP-ZE (1.8L) engine.  The BP is not expensive at all either.  However, if you can find a 12A whether it be N/A or Turbo, it will most likely need a rebuild.  Just keep that in mind...  Hope this helps.
