    2001 T1 Run Offs

I was doing so housecleaning today (new furniture arrives tomorrow) and ran across an old VHS copy of the 2001 SCCA T1 Run Offs. This is the famous "rain race" that started the Heinricy/Phoenix dynasty.

Interestingly enough, JH "only" qualified 2nd behind Tommy Archer in a Viper. Bob Shader was 3rd in a C5 and my NE Ohio hero Freddy Baker started 4th in a red Viper. It is cool seeing the names that are still players in T1 today and those who aren't to be seen in Club Racing. I did see Chris Ingle's name, but before the legal name change (that's alot of work and cost for one letter, Chris Wink), Scotty B. White (making friends with Freddy I see!), John Yarocz in a WS6 Firebird (did well in the rain!), Kevin Mixon of now-NASA fame.

Seeing the video did run chills down my back when I realized the date this race was run...late September 2001. I can't imagine the mood of the paddocks during that week. If someone reading this was present I'd love to hear your comments.

David, if you have the equipment to throw the video up on YouTube, I'd love to see it.

    Hey, that's "Inge."  Wink

Yeah, I was there - my first runoffs    ...world events hard to put out of my head.  On a lighter note, I think I still have both the in-car and the Speed Coverage of that race...Heinricy lapping the field.  Unreal.  Also of some note was Chip Van Vurst in his Viper (no ABS, no traction control) finished 2d in that race driving on the Kumho Victoracer...I think.  I also think Bob (Yoda) Henderson finished 3d in that race and then celebrated his 112th birthday too.  Wink

About half way thru the race, I was running 5th and gaining on 4th when I hydroplaned off at 10 and spent the rest of the race watching it from the kitty litter.  Unknown to me at that time, the car was just awful...slammed all the way down on the bump stops...50 lbs overweight, not tuned, not cornerweighted, no T1 kit, etc, etc.  Man, was that thing a handful, especially at Mid Ohio, with all the concrete, and in a deluge with just the Victoracers under me.  UGLY!!!!   ha ha

I wonder if that is the same Bob Henderson I raced against in MY first Runoffs in 1989 (SSC).  Of course that was 12 years earlier so he was still a young man of only 100.  Wink  Was he still racing with the bear in the passenger seat in 2001?

I'm sure it probably was...and I think I do remember a bear.  I think he's still an SCCA official and his membership number is like 00023 or something along those lines.  Big Smile Wink

Thanks Joe. Sad  I guess the good news is that in the 18 years since then I only made it to 4 more Runoffs so I am still a pup in racing years.  Wink

    David:

I was there... supporting fellow Viper-racer and Bobby (not Tommy) Archer.  Unfortunately, Bobby had decided not to mount rains and went out on Hoosier A-compound slicks.  Insetad of letting up, the rain just continued to get worse, and even a car control master like Bobby could not keep the car pointed straight.  Scotty White told me after the race that he saw Bobby make the most incredible save ever running up into the Keyhole when there was an absolute river running across the pavement.  Speaking of incredible, if memory serves, Heinrocket lapped the field in that weather!
