    Hewland gearbox

Please advise how much lube should be used.  How do I check the level?  Could you recommend type and weight of the gear lube?  Gearbox sits behind Nissan A-12 engine in Lola 342 FF converted to DSR.

    Thank you.

There's a fill plug on the side of the gearbox, fill to just below the plug.
If I had all the money back that I've spent on cars.... I'd spend it on cars.

    Huh? Does this cause foaming?

Ask Taylor Race. They are the experts.

It may.  I work with non-automotive gearboxes and in our experience foaming can go away with more oil or less oil.

Too much oil is definitely a problem because it causes churning - excess energy being put into mixing the oil.  I would guess the comment above refers to having oil immersing the gear teeth contact region, where the design is to have the oil below that and the spinning gear dips into the oil and carries a film of lubricant through the contact region.

Whether it's churning or foaming, you'll see increased temps and more lost power.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I hadn't thought of churning. I suppose also if the oil is too low, barely touching the teeth, might it be "blown" away from the gear tips due to high rpm?
