Re: New Dunlop Sizes for ST / STS / STX

You are right they just posted an update and they are expecting them in 2 to 3 weeks

    Even posted some prices

    195/60R14 $98 each
    195/50R15 $113 each
    205/50R15 $107 each

I am a bit surprised by the prices given they are currently selling the 195/55R15 for $89 and the 205/55R16 for $105

hmmmm. 195/60/14s on 14x7 rpf1's for STS? Could be sweet...

Yea, sweet for driving to and from events and maybe in the rain. Way too much sidewall to be fast around the course. The 15in sizes would transition substantially better.

The 195/60/14's are tall as well (23.3).  On paper I'd go for the 185/60/14 as its .5" shorter (22.8).

I doubt either will be faster than the 15's but they would be a good option for those on a tight budget since you can run the stock wheels.  Hopefully they will also be a good street/rain tire for us ES Miata drivers.

I emailed the Miata.net contact about other "new" sized Z1s and his response was: "Thanks for your email. Unfortunately no new/better sizes in 17 or 18 that I am aware of. Sorry."

Car applications for Requested Tire Sizes

Could you guys list typical car applications for the requested new sizes listed below?

Good news is that the 205/50-15 size happened due to Dunlop US asking for that size for ST.

    Thanks - Rick

Correction Rick, we want a 225/45R15. Well to at least match the Hankook... but if its possible to do a 225/40R15. =)

Fixed. Freudian slip, trying to help ST feel better about this year's PAX #s. :)

Kool.  It would make a good size for those STR competitors as well who opt to run the 15x9s (miatas, mr2 spyder...etc).

Likely I'd forgo my tire testing this year for 255/35R17 or 265/30R18 and hit up Dunlop. Otherwise, I am probably going to spend a few events testing RE-11s and R1Rs.

285/30-18 would be the hot tire for 2wd STU. This would mainly include BMW M3s (especially 2001-2006 M3). Yoko AD08 is the only performance tire in that size currently (and presumably the Dunlop would be significantly cheaper and equally goodYes).

245/45/16 would be a good tire for the 02-05 Subaru WRX

245/45/16 would be a good tire for lots of cars if someone made a light, wide, readily available 16" wheel

Re: Car applications for Requested Tire Sizes

255/40/15 or 245/40/15. It would be THE tire to have for the cars running 15x9s. That includes at least:

    - miatas (90-05, not 06+ mx5s), toyota MR2 & MR-S, rx-7 and perhaps porsches in the new STR class (basically all the lighter/older cars made for smaller diameter tires)
    - people running various xSP and SM/SSM cars in local street tire classes
    - LOTS of street miatas with forced induction, v8 swaps, etc that need a lot of tire to put down power
    - lots more street miatas that just want to look gooood.... :)

15x9 wheels are now very affordable in easy fitment ($120 each at Tire Rack; a bit more for the popular and very light 6UL from 949) and they are going to be selling like hotcakes... and 225 is barely enough rubber to fit. We want more!

Right now Hankook has my business because their 225/45/15 is the widest street tire out there (along with a toyo) with the short diameter that the miata needs. But I think there's a real opportunity for someone to not match, but go "over the top" of the 'kooks much like Hoosier did for race rubber when they made the 275/35/15, which seems to be a top selller. I'm not a market researcher, just a miataphile, but I do know that they've made over 750,000 miatas that can use such a tire on 15x9s, and miatas are THE most popular car at autocrosses across the country....

I'm guessing the 225/45-15 application is also for every too heavy car trying to play in ST.

    Rick,

Not necessarily for AutoX but Dunlop,Bridgestone,Yokohama are leaving a lot of sales on the table by not producing a 315/30-18 tire.   That is a great rear size for Vette/Porsche where we have limited tire availability ie Michelin PS2's  yuck.
