Yes, we used the Z212 (street) in the pouring pouring rain on Saturday, and the dry Z214's on Sunday.  Still managed to pull over 1g continuous on the street tires, in standing water, in an HS car....I have not reviewed the video and data from Sunday, just got home after a 7 hour drive....sleepy time!

Excellent job! Can't wait to hear more about what you thought of the tires.

I was planning on Z212 wets, and running Z214s instead of V710s would mean I never have to lose out on contingency when I switch to wets. In the northeast, that could be very nice...

I guess we will get to see if the Z214 is faster than the old Kumho Victoracer:

Kumho Tires Named Official Tire of Mazda MX-5 Cup Through 2008

Topeka, Kan. - SCCA Pro Racing Ltd. and Kumho Tires announced today a multi-year agreement that makes Kumho the Official Tire of the SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup through the 2008 season.

Beginning with the Grand Prix of Houston, April 20-22, each MX-5 Cup car will be outfitted with Kumho's Victoracer V700 DOT-approved racing tire.

Yes, this has been a long-coming plan of Hankook to back out of the Series...rising support costs and the need for a lot of hand-holding and unnecessary involvement from the company was probably to blame....when I heard about it 8 months ago, the guys at Hankook were actually relieved :)

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

After Steve W. getting 2nd in AS at Nationals last year with A6 245/45-16 on all four corners on his AP1 S2000, I thought I would give that tire size configuration a try. Based on what I have read in this forum, Kumho dragging their feet on making 245/45-16 V710's, and the cost/longevity of the A6's, I've decided to try the Z214's out.

With my existing V710's, I typically have my pressure ~31F/29R, where would be a good start place with the Z214's?

    Thanks,

Keep us posted on this particular tire as me and my SRT-4 buddies are probably going to try and cram that tire in our wheel wells real soon.

edit: I'm the Steve W. that, uhh, did not finish 2nd in anything at nats last year.

Will do!  I must admit that I'm not a national caliber driver, yet, but I'll be happy to share what I learn any way.Smile  I would love to read what you guys learn with the Z214's as well.  It would be great to get another competitive tire in the mix.

Whoops!!  I was lazy... I should have been more clear put both names.  Steve Wynveen was the S2000 driver that I was referring to.  Big Smile  Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

The sidewall carcass is much stiffer in the Z214 than the V710 and the A6, theoretically you should need less pressure.  You will probably figure it out right away, but Hankook recommends starting closer to 38-40psi and going up or down from there.  In the super-camber-challenged HS car, I run about 47psi front (hot) and 55 psi rear, but AWD really helps any patch deficit...but any lower pressure, and I am cording the sidewalls :)

That is good info to know.  I am now a bit concerned getting the 245/45-16's on my front wheels that are 6.5" as the V710's 225/50-16's are already quite pinched. We will soon see.  Worst case would be is that I would need to buy some 225/50-16's for my fronts and have a couple of spare 245/45-16's for the rear.

This at least gets me in the ballpark to start with. I will likely start with 40 and go from there.  Too bad I didn't get these for the 2 test and tunes...  BTW, how did you get those numbers from Hankook?

    Thanks,

Yes, they wrote a Competition Tire Guide that is unpublished.  I can post it here if I get permission.

That doesn't sound horribly stiff.  I ran 32psi at most lots on my heavier more powerfull RS running taller 225/50/16 V710's and ran 30 all the way around on slick asphault, etc.  I was able to get around 85-90 runs before they corded.  And that was usually in the middle not the typical cording on the outside like most hoosier and or mini drivers see.

Let us know how it goes, I love my Hankooks.  I ran them before I was a contract driver, and I will run them after they boot my slow butt too!  I think I need a faster class, HS is a little pedestrian.  I got to drive an Evo as an instructor on Sunday, holy crap! :)

Re: Who's used the Hankook Z214??

Just got the Z214's 245/45-16's mounted on my narrow 6.5" and 7.5" wheels.

Some notes... my V710 size configuration was:
    225/50-16 Fronts
265/45-16 Rears (taller than what should be on there 245/45-16)

    Width Comparisons
Z214's are on on left side of the image, and the rear tires are closest to the camera... Notice how the V710's 225's are pretty close to the same width to the Z214's 245's.

    Pinch Comparisons
Z214's on left side of the image, and the rear tires are closest to the camera. Look how much better the rear pinch and how little difference there is between the fronts.

This is going to be fun!!

Man, that far left one looks awfully pinched to me. The Kumho on the far right though doesn't look quite as bad.

Any reason you went with the 245's and not the 255 rears?

It does have a little more pinch.  From what I was told, the Z214's are narrower than the A6's and Steve Wynveen was successful with 245/45's.  So, I'm hoping it shouldn't be a problem with the Z214's.  [crossing my fingers]

Since the fronts were further away in the other pics, here are a couple of more pics that better show the pinch differences between 225's vs. 245's.

    What do you think?
