Shocks, and their associated settings, have a lot to do with launch capability, too.  Maybe all the Solsti mentioned so far have the same shocks and were set the same, but somehow I doubt it.

Hmmm...Maybe the Hoosier lets the tires spin a little keeping the car up in the revs since I can dump the clutch on my car and it will just barely spin the tires due to too much traction with the Kumho.
It will barely lay a patch on street tires.
Some of those launches and 60' times were on the A6 too(albeit 245's)

Realizing this is an older thread, I'm wondering what the Solstice guys have concluded in the last two years about the best tire and size to run on an n/a Z0K Solstice?  I just bought a new Z0K and some SSR's and I'm looking forward to it.

In  AS the fastest solstice as on 295 hoosiers.......ya you read it right. If the NA solstice has taller gears than the GXP then the 285 Hoosier may be a better choice. the AS one has a short 2nd gear.

And Pro-solo starts can be painful on the stock clutch with sticky tires.

edit: this is with a GXP. an NA Sol might not have that problem.

because 285's were not enough...

The discussion above was about the 2006 Pro Solo Finale.  My 2006 Z0K Solstice took 1-2 in that event at the hands of Joe Tharpe and Chris Harvey on 285 Hoosiers.  The majority of CS Solstice drivers seem to be on the 285 Hoosiers.  Some guys do still run the 245 Kumhos though. 

I found that dropping the clutch at ~4-5K gave the car a little wheel spin and kept it in the power band at launch.

Thanks guys.  I'm surprised that the 285's (or 295's for that matter) fit well enough on an 8 inch wheel without bulging to make it effective.  I would've purchased 245's 710's until I asked this question; now I'm wondering...

 from what I understand, the 295's have larger sidewalls and fit better than the short sidewalled 285.

In my opinion they don't.  We run 275/35 Hoosiers.  My car owner and I have gone back and forth between the 275 and 295 this year.  The car just feels skittish with the 295s on, especially at high speed.  I actually had a pretty good comparison at Devens a few weeks ago.  We ran the 295s on Saturday and the 275s on Sunday.  Even though the times don't reflect it, the car felt much better on Sunday.  The slower times I think had to do with having to shift into 3rd and back twice.

The benefit with the 285s for the NA would be gearing.  You don't have to worry about an insanely short 2nd gear, and the shorter tires would help you dig out of the corners.

Do you think that running a set of 285/30/18 R6's on the n/a Z0K will give up a lot of time over A6's?  I can get a set of barely used R6's for a good deal and since I've not yet run my car I'm thinking that trying out the various sizes to get a feel for the car makes sense.  I'm just wondering how much grip the R6's give up to the A6's.  The treadwear for the R6 is the same as the 710's for what that's worth.

Treadwear ratings are almost complete BS.

The R6's will never get enough heat in them on an autox course to get sticky.  They would be ok to play at local events, but you'll still get smoked by someone on A6's or 710's.

If you are a single driver, then what Dave said is true; you'll have a hard time generating the heat necessary to make the tires truly effective.

I can think of a few select times when using R6's might work:  If you are campaigning a dual-driver car on a day where the ambient and ground temperatures are high, the R6's may be more effective.  Basically it comes down to heat management, as once the tires get overheated, they certainly will make driving more difficult.
