    2 quick questions.

1- will there be a speed limit on the course?  I know when I did a PDX at Hallett last year, we had an 85 MPH speed limit.

2- are spectators allowed?  My dad & several friends are interested in coming to watch.

    No Speed limit

Specatators over 18 may come in the infield with you, under 18 should go to west side of track on outside of oval and watch from the seats there.

Level 2 Club Trials (for those of you who may not know) are just like a level 1 PDX except that each car has a transponder.

Kim, I am not sure if we could support a whole day of them. Most people prefer to NOT be officially timed (although I understand that they do a lot of things with stop watches).  Some of this feeling may be due to insurance reasons, as I was informed that older cars insurance is void & nul if it's a "timed event". Also, you have to rent the transponders and that adds to the cost.

Once the St. Louis Region PDX is done, this could be come a program just like Solo, RallyCross, etc.  Then anything is possible.

Cool - I'll have to swap to the PCM with the higher speed limiter (street PCM only goes to 106)

Re: PDX Track Day May 21, 2006 in St. Louis Region at Gateway Raceway

So, is this event appropriate for a complete newbie to tracks and autocross?  Or would an entry-level autocross event be a better first step?

My 18 year old son  (BMW 325) and myself (MINI Cooper  Sa) are interested in improving our driving skills, so probably need as much or more  "class"  than  "track".

    Thanks,
    Don

Re: PDX Track Day May 21, 2006 in St. Louis Region at Gateway Raceway

Don, I think the key word here is Seat Time

There decision between the 2 choices doesn't have to be a first step vs second step.  Think of it as different steps that can be done along side each other.

The Track Day can work towards Improving your driving skills and being more familiar with your car and what it will do and won't do at speed.  Will a track day give you instant autocross skills.  No.  But if you can afford to do both - do it and your learning curve will be shortned.  No matter what when you start autocrossing the more time your rear end is planted in the car the better.

An autocross you will get 3-4 or 5 runs at 40-50 seconds each. (5 MINUTES)  At the PDX you are going to get 4-5 sessions at 20 minutes each. (80-100 MINUTES = or 16 Autocross Events) You will go at much faster speeds at the PDX than at the Autocross.

At these PDX "Track Days" events you start out as a novice with an instructor and you can request one all day to help you if you need it or not.  So you can get lots of help from a experience driver.

EVO school is intense autocross practice, but is usually better to take after you are a Solo Driver with a season under you belt learning your way around and want to get 100% out of your car.

Now I made it clear as MUD didn't I?

Re: PDX Track Day May 21, 2006 in St. Louis Region at Gateway Raceway

    Janice,

Thanks for the reply.  My main goal is to learn more about the car (and driving skills in general).  Autocrossing is something my son and I are interested in at some point.  Right now learning things that make both of use better/safer drivers on the street is the plan.

Main concern is to find an event that is appropriate to complete track novices!  :-)

Seconday concerns relate to wear-and-tear on tires etc.  Both are cars are essentially stock street cars (mine even has the dreaded runflats) and I'm trying to decide if this should wait until I save up for some summer tires and wheels.

At a minumum, I think we'll come and spectate (as I recall that is allowed) so we know what to expect the next time, and what equipment we ought to be running etc.

    Thanks,
    Don

Re: PDX Track Day May 21, 2006 in St. Louis Region at Gateway Raceway

The PDX is exactly what you want.  It is not very hard on tires - in fact I was going to run my run flats on my MINI as Larry Kronemeyer ran his streets whn he did it at the 2 - 20 minute session one Lat year. It did not use up his streets.  Yes, it is some off of them - but from what people tell me it's not horrible on them.

The PDX is for absolute novices - it has 3 driving experience levels - Novice - Intermediate and Advanced.

You would be fine as someone who has never been on a track as we have several just like you.

Well I don't want to come out and say it and jinx it but....

What if, lets say the track has some excess moisture on it?

Two hours is a lot of seat time for the money!

Would it be ok for a racer like myself to use the track time for testing and tuning on my ITA car?

If it rains you will get to find out why the NASCAR boys don't race in it on ovals! Seriously, rain is the greatest teacher of smoothness and physics in a track environment or street for that matter. It forces you to focus on DRIVING which is what this is all about.
