Do you need a workers license for this? I might be interested but i've never worked an event before.

Yes, You need to be an scca member and have scca flagging and communications license as well as experience in flagging. Experience means 2 full weekends of scca club flagging minimum within the last 6  months prior to the race weekend in April 2008. There are other worker positions which do not require licenses. They would be equipment marshals, and  worker support services such as lunch delivery, food prep . We can use all the help we can get. It takes 30-40 of those volunteers to support the 80-100 F&C volunteers.

I've been an scca member for 3 years now but I don't have an flagging and comm experience nor a license. How early on Sunday would I be able to leave and fly home? Also, is there any hotel rooms left since i'm going to be coming a long way?

92Hstocker:  The race weekend starts on thurs night Apr24 when you register onsite. The race weekend ends about 5PM Sun apr 27. It takes about 1hr to get back to the airport so I am guessing the earliest returning flight would be 8PM. Rooms are first come first serve and this is early in the reg process. I recommend that you apply as directed in the call for workers letter link. Apply for worker services or  (equipment) course  marshal. Also please contact either Sydney Davis or James Rogerson by email ( emails on call letter) directly for positions other than Flagging.

Does Houston have a mass transit system where I could hop on a train or bus and take it directly to the airport?

Re: 2008 Houston GrandPrix Volunteer Registration

92hstocker:  You can get to the track/hotel from the airport by commercial shuttles for about $25. As for getting back to the airport, you can do it the same way since the event hotel is just across the street from the track. We (Hou Region SCCA ) also try to get the volunteers free rides back to the airport by asking local scca members to help out those going back to the airport. There are two airports, Houston Intercontinental (IAH) (30 miles) and Hobby Airport. Hobby is closer to the track (15 miles) but flights are harder to schedule with less carriers.

    Wave&Save:

Hi W&S, I see that rooms "may" be available free to some workers. Would these rooms be:

    1. For Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights only (or what)?
    2. Do you know costs for extra nights (fly in Wed or Thurs and fly out on Mon)?
    3. Are the freebie rooms in the "event hotel" that is just across the street from the track?
    4. Contact info for the hotel?

Thanks, Mo (flaggermo "at" yopics "dot" net)

Re: 2008 Houston GrandPrix Volunteer Registration

Mo & All: The free rooms are double occupancy for three nights,( thur, fri & sat) only..  Cost of additional room are approx. $75-100, I think.  Hotel is just across the street from the track to the north, 2blocks away.  We will have transport to /from hotel to track for  F&C.  Please contact  one of the three race chiefs on the call letter for more info.  Registration on site is open Thurs 4-5PM  to about 10PM and early fri 5:30am for those arriving late thurs. Rooms for Sun night are on your own for a Mon am flight.
