What is the best wheel and tire size for a Solo Vee?

My brother and I are entertaining the idea of purchasing a couple of old Formula Vee's from a person locally and getting them ready for Solo II events.  We have never done any solo events before, we just thought we would jump in feet first :-)

The cars are more or less ready for the class already with 1600cc engines and such, but they still have the skinny FV wheels.  What is the recommended wheel size and tire size for a Solo Vee?  Any recommendations as well for a cheap place to find a used set of wheels and tires just to get the things started?

     Thanks

    B.

Re: What is the best wheel and tire size for a Solo Vee?

Most of us are using Hoosier race slicks.  Fronts are mostly 7.5x20x13 on 8" wheels.  Rears are usually either 9.0x20x13 or 9.0x22x13 on 10" wheels depending on gearing.  Finding used wheels can be a challenge.  You might check with Diamond Racing Wheels for inexpensive new steel wheels.  I use Diamonds for my rain tires.   Don't know a source for used tires.  If there are any C Sports Racers in your area, they use the same size tires.

I use on a very modified fomula vee, 7x13 rims on the front with 20x8x13 Goodyear cantilevered tires.  On the rear are 10x15 rims with 22.5 x9.5 x15 Hoosiers.
The rear rims are available at most off road/dunebuggy supply houses.

Re: What is the best wheel and tire size for a Solo Vee?

When I ran my Solo Vee, it was with 20X7.5X13 front hoosier R25A Slicks on 13X8 wheels and 21X10X13 Hoosier R25A Slicks on 13X10 wheels in the rear. Personally I liked the 21X10X13 better than the 20X9X13 because they heated up faster. I think this was due to the contruction differences in the tires (the 20X9X13 are C3000's)

Oddly enough, the 21X10X13 actually has 1/4" LESS tread width than the 20X9X13.

If you want to see what it looks like, I still have the for sale web page up from when I sold the car last year. Go to www.typearacing.com.

ah ok, I have looked at that car many times :)  I just never payed any attention to the tire size as it was already sold.  Probably the best looking SoloVee or Formula Vee I have ever seen :)  Hope it found a happy home.

Why, what small tires you have there! Wink

Here's what 15.0 (wide) x 27.0' (tall) slicks look like on a 15" (diameter) VW rim:

Needless to say, the driver wasn't reaching for 3rd gear on that run.

To answer the original poster's question, here's an old web site that lists the tire/wheel sizes and gear ratios run by many of the top Solo Vee competitors at the turn of the century.....
