Long time SCCA SE Division Chief Steward Fred Schmucker - a man of commitment and conviction - love him or hate him - he was dedicated to the SCCA - to Road Racing and to the SE Division and worked hard at making racing fun, safe and exciting for everyone under his "watch". I considered Fred a friend and a trusted voice in the SE Division - he will be missed. God Speed My Friend - God Speed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Nancy and his family and all of his friends and associates that I know share this terrible loss and mourn his passing. Fred was one of a kind and always sharp of wit and a joke - he was always there if you needed him and was so many times a voice of reason when it was so badly needed. His guidance was appreciated and his passing was unexpected and sudden - I will pass on more details as they come - as the shock of this hit me hard - I wanted to make sure everyone was informed. I would like to move that this year's SIC be run in memory of Fred and as a tribute to his many contributions to the SE Division.......I have lost a friend - the SCCA has lost a knowledgeable voice and the SE Division has lost yet another long time supporter, enthusiast, leader and legend of the sport -  true racer at heart.

Thanks, Terry, for the info. Fred really was one of the fixtures of the SCCA, especially the SEDIV. Honestly, it was always a joy to talk to Fred, whether he was upset with you or happy to see you. To me, he was always fair regardless of the situation. Great man, through and through. I'm all for the SIC being run in memory of Fred...maybe even every year for that matter. Racing in the SE won't be the same without him. Godspeed Fred!

As the shock subsides somewhat - though the pain of the loss lingers - the stories all of us can share about Fred and his personality, commitment and dedication to the sport and to SE Division would fill a book - his memory will always be etched in my mind...Fred was the Chief Steward when I returned to racing after a long hiatus - he called me in for a supposed pass under yellow - I'll never forget it nor did he - on occassion after that - on a test day he would sometimes "call me in" and I would drive up pit lane and see Fred standing there - unlit cigar in his mouth - waiting for me to pull up and stop...I would look at him puzzled and say "I didn't do anything" - and he would say - "I know - I just wanted to say hi" - he would then laugh and signal me on my way - this went on for a few years and Fred was one of my biggest supporters - his voice of reason will always be remembered. Just a few weeks ago after the mid-year meeting he and I were discussing the AGT and the SCCA - and he said that he could not wait to see me win the SEDivision championship and hand me the title on stage himself as we laughed about when I first came back to auto racing and was driving a Legends car - he used to laugh that I was the only driver that "wore" his car....good times....he will be missed. God willing and my winning streak holds - the SIC and the SARRC Championship in GT1 will be dedicated to Fred and his legacy.

Fred and I had a wonderful friendship and as he was my biggest supporter – I too was his and many of us knew that under the gruff complexity of layers – laid the heart of a dedicated gentleman with wisdom and caring beyond most folk’s comprehension – he was a good man and I only hope that his legacy and all that he stood for within the ranks of the SCCA is not forgotten.
