I'd pick a Z06 (C5) for SS.  But then, I'm a cheapskate and like torque.

If I had the money and a garage, I'd pick up an S2000 CR for A Stock.  I haven't driven a Cayman, but it seems that it and the 986 Boxster S are pretty close to equal, and they're probably not the car to have on most courses.

Would be cool to see Sammy vs Paul & Lynne head to head in FS in the Shelby's..... but they are fords.... I think the GXP's look pretty competitive, one of the few cars I haven't driven. The STI in AS should also be very competitive, and you can pray for rain. STi's are alot of fun.... just get most of the way through the corner and flat-foot it out. throttle modulation? what's that? And Subie pays. Evos flop around the course like a fish out of water. Not sure what good an awd car is with only 3 wheels on the ground.

 BS... would go for a 350z instead of the monstrous torque of the RX-8... I've driven both and the torquey 350z is much more fun to drive. I haven't followed up on how they do on the course much though. RX-8 just feels like a HS car in acceleration - sorry Mazda guys. Plus is there is Mazda contingency money.

 I'm not stupid enough to bring my WU8 Z4C out of retirement against the Shelby's....I'll continue to run my C5 Z06 or beg, borrow, or steal a co-drive.

 That is exactly why I didn't buy a Mazda 3 in '06.  While I was only slightly speedier in GS, I was coming out of a car that turned, stopped, didn't push, and could easily be driven by the gas pedal to move the rear.

I know I rented a Mini ride to finish out last year, it wasn't my cup of joe, mainly because of the feeling of driving a phone booth and the pushiness.  All done since I didn't realize how competitive an EP car I had sitting in the garage.  That was an epiphany that came out as I saw my Thursday run 1 time, even though it was dirty.

If I was going back to stock, I would be looking hard at either a ZOK Solstice or MSR MX-5 for CS.  Either of those two seem to be the best bang for buckage.

I've been "told" they clear.  We'll definitely be test fitting soon.  FWIW 225/45 hankooks clear....but those are no where near as big.

After GRM's latest tire test I am glad I got the 205/50R15 V710s for next year, but I'll probably have to learn how to shift to third.

Hey Mark,

Regardless on what article you read (some say the RS will be here in 08', some say 09'), the X/ RS is, in fact, out in Japan and more than likely will replace the Evo 9 RS here in the States.  Also, the GSR is suppose to have the 6sp SST option as well.  Sadly, it looks like the GSR and MR Evo X is heavier.

DS is unclear as well, mostly due to potential newcomers.  We haven't really seen yet what the new WRX can do. There's a new R32 Golf coming.  Wsa the TT there this year a new version?  If so was it a V6 quattro?  

The TT was a 1.8T quattro...ALMS edition which gets you 18x8 wheels (I think it had 275 Hoosiers)

Regardless on what article you read (some say the RS will be here in 08', some say 09'), the X/ RS is, in fact, out in Japan and more than likely will replace the Evo 9 RS here in the States.  Also, the GSR is suppose to have the 6sp SST option as well.  Sadly, it looks like the GSR and MR Evo X is heavier.

Maybe you're confusing the Japan model line up with the US line up?  Japan gets the GSR with 5 sp manual or 6 spd SST, and then the RS with 5 spd manual.  For the US, the 5 spd manual will be called the GSR model and the 6 spd SST will be called the MR model.  Weight gain appears to not be as high as initially reported; +45 lbs for the GSR and + 100 lbs for the MR is what several of the latest test sources are reporting.  While weight increased overall, the chassis is signifiantly stiffer, the F/R balance is better, and the CG is lower.  Heavier is not necessarily worse, the handling improvement of the 2008 Evo over the 2006 IX seems to bear this out.

 The MR gets Eibach springs (and Bilstein shocks, shocks not an issue for most classes), not sure if that will be an option on the GSR.  The Jpn RS in addition to the radio/electronics/spoiler delete is missing items such as the Eibach springs, Recaro seats (no side bolsters), smaller wheels, etc. under the guise that racers will replace these items anyways.  In Jpn the RS also gets a S-AWC delete, so if this holds true for the US it may not be a contender for classes where these items can't be replaced/added.

Too early for option lists and final configurations, so it's hard to pinpoint what exactly the US will be able to pick and choose from:

One thing that I read in Motor Trend was that the GSR was going to get 18x8 inch wheels where as the MR would be getting 18x8.5 inch wheels.  So to get the wider wheels you need to get the more expensive car that weighs more and has the sequential gearbox which does not have a launch control function from what I have heard.  I wonder how that might affect the model choice atleast for stock class.

 I take it you haven't gone shopping for Evo IX replacement struts.  AFAIK, the only option is to ship the stock struts off to have them custom valved.  Not that it matters... the lack of camber, terrible body roll, and ridiculously expensive OEM clutch on the IX pushed me to BSP (would do STU but I'm addicted to R-comps).

I saw that too, but the Mitsubishi link I supplied above listing the initial US-Specs indicates otherwise.  I think the 8" GSR wheels may have been a Jpn deal, and I think that the other wheels are still a stand-alone option there

Well, respectfully.....  If you are going to pick a car based on it's competitiveness in class and limit it to stock classes, it seems like you might not have asked the right question....

 

Ignoring street use as a reason to buy a car, it seems like the ES MR2 is the best bang for buck, closest to a sure thing overdog we have right now.  I say this because they are relatively cheap compared to anything else on the list, and I don't think anyone will argue there is a less disputable "car to have for the class" on your list.

like the no-motion lower rev limiter (not really launch control, though people call it that) on the manual trans car, it is only intended to protect the drivetrain from being excessively shocked, not to provide optimum launching

I would think you'd launch the SST just like a DSG; hold the brake and gas down simultaneously and then lift off the brake to launch when the tree comes down.  It likely would be consistent, though possibly consistent and slower off the line.  Missed up/down shifts would be a think of the past as would being in the wrong gear at the wrong time if you believe the SST reports so far
