Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
TrEvoRS:Check out this link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=100I have been following the discussions everywhere, but haven't seen this test mentioned anywhere. For some reason it is hidden on Tirerack's website -Just found it. Looks like if money is no object Neova's are still the best, but Dunlop's are probably the best budget alternative.
Wow those Dunlops look like a good rain tire. I wouldn't have guessed they would be faster in the dry than the RE-01r, unless multiple laps were performed making heat a variable. I haven't had the time to test the Dunlops as hoped, since I've been dialing-in a set-up for RE-01Rs for an event this weekend, to determine the class champion. But it's supposed to rain...James want to help swap tires Sat.? :)

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
I am going to run STX and quit dsp next year in anticipation of a 2009 shakeup for dsp/bsp - I want to stop changing my tires over at the event also - time issues and I don't have a trailer - I also don't feel like spending the money to bump my fenders to run 285's or the cost of that tire - so I think It is a strong class locally also - Please help. all I have to do is put the cat back on the car and change the tires...
WHAT TIRES SHOULD I RUN???? How about for the heavy rain??
any input would be cool

"Will Change Tires For Lunch" I have to decide whether I am going to be in San Diego (points battle, I missed a few races) or go to CSW (I have not won a race in HS at Cal Club this year, but I have only done 4, so way out of the points.....maybe SK2 for the uber-PAX?).

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
We ran the Dunlops at the CSCC season opener, and were surprised at the results. We took 1st and 2nd in STU. The top STU STi was running in SM and ran a time between our 2 raw times. The fastest STU BMW M3 in the country was also there, but they had issues putting power down in the first run group. Conditions were about 55 deg and dry, 2 drivers, with full tread tires. I would speculate the 245/40-17 Direzzas Z1s are faster than the Bridgestone RE-01Rs, that I was running the last 4 events, by about .5 sec on a low 50 sec course. This would be for my front heavy, front drive biased Evo. The Dunlops seem stiffer, brake better, and don't break away as easily in the front as the softer RE- 01Rs. Also the Z1s are much more heat tolerant. We ran 6 extra runs in the 3rd group in ~70 deg temp. Where the RE-01Rs would go off in about 2.5 runs, the Dunlops were good until the 6th run.

Caffeine Slug:Anybody know where to find these in 245/40-17 right now? Tirerack doesn't know when they'll get more, and I haven't found them anywhere else.
Discount Tire Direct tells me that they can get them, but they are not on their website yet - you have to call them. And if you do order them, tell them that ButtDyno sent you. Seriously :) John

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Hmmm, 215/40/17 looks like an interesting option for the STS/STS2 Civic/Miata/CRX crowd, especially if your local venue is open enough that you run out of second gear on the 195/50/15 B-stones.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
ProDarwin:That's the right size for me... but 17s weigh too much :(
Tirerack has forged TR Motorsports F1s in 17x7.5", 4X100, 37 mm offset that weigh 12 lbs each. They only show them as a Lotus Elise Sport Package rear fitment, but I can't see why they wouldn't work on a SC2/Civic/CRX/Miata with the possible exception of hub bore (which is relatively easily remedied if that's the only hitch) . They are a little spendy at $439 each.
I figure the 17" Dirzera/TR Motorsports combo would be about 3 lbs/corner heavier than the common 15" Enkei RPF1/B-stone combo used by many STS/STS2 competitors.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
My buddy just bought a set of these for a local street tire Stock class for his '05 Mazda3 sedan in the 235/45-17 size from TireRack. On a 6.5" wheel, they are HUGE. Unmounted, compared to the 225 RE-01R's (also unmounted) they appeared nearly an inch wider (did I say they were huge?).
225 Hankook Z212 and Dunlop Z1:

Plenty of room (finger and a half width behind the tire)--

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Hey James, good seeing you yesterday. 2nd competition results on the Direzza Z1s, this time in warm 75 -80 deg weather. We won STU and had the fastest street tire times overall. The other 2 top national cars were within a few tenths (STI and M3), but they weren't on fresh tires. The tires confirmed our conclusions last time about handling heat well. There was some noticeable drop off in grip after 4-5 runs but nothing near like a 615 or a RE01R. We are also on full treads, so shaving could help some by not retaining heat. 1st run of the 1st group, the lightly loaded rear tires of the Evo was very loose in the first half of the course. These need a bit more heat than the RE01s before they come in. I would say on heavier cars, or cars that overwork the tires (FWD), the Dunlops could be one of the top 2 tires available at this time.

...the 195/55-15 has very similar size specs to the RT-615 205/50-15...
Has anyone tried the 195/55-15's?

Has anyone tested these in cold weather (in the 40s or 50s)?

That's the size I'll be looking at as well. I don't understand why these tire companies can't be upfront & somewhat definitive on their release dates. Why does it have to be such a big mystery? I'm sure they have a general idea when they plan to bring out each tire size, so what's the big deal in letting us know? Last year Bridgestone was pretty open about it and made them available before the start of the season. Seems like Dunlop and Toyo aren't as organized or something. I was really hoping to see some test results and personal opinions on these new offerings by now.

Re: Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1
Remember that while we are their "customers", we are not their top priority. Their biggest money makers are OEM tires, tires sold to Sears and quick tire change places, to the general public. We get our stuff when they become available. I know with Hankook, the people in the US offices are fighting to get us information and firm dates on tire deliveries, but if they have no info themselves or the main mother company overseas are not in a hurry, it just gets here when it gets here. The Dunlop tire is sold through Goodyear. We were meeting with a local retailer a few days ago who had his Goodyear rep there, and he said that they just found out about the Z1 even existing mere days ago, and only because people were asking for them. Again, priorities....200 sets of passenger car tires at a higher profit margin is way higher on the totem pole than 10 sets of specialty performance tires at half the PM. They'll get here eventually, we just have to wait.

Actually, Bridgestone knew they were bringing the smaller sizes of RE-01R into the states back in October '06. I learned about it in Dec '06. They didn't release anything publicly until mid-March '07.

James is right on the money. While it may seem to us that we are this huge market opportunity, it just is not the case. Only when a company decides to use us as "peer leaders" in a marketing push (that's marketing, not sales), do they get involved to the degree you suggest. We are fortunate that Bridgestone's Director of Business Development is an SCCA autocrosser and club racer of note (look up Mike Van Sicklen in your rulebook champions listing). He knows how to use SCCA success for marketing to hi-performance street-use folks. Same was true when Doug Reed came to Hankook from SCCA club racing. That's when the Z212 street tire came out and all of the good R-compounds. --Andy
