MX-5 vs 99 Miata vs Solstice

So, what do you get when you combine a new MX-5, one of the fastest 99 Miatas in the country and a Solstice with a stack of new Hoosiers and a few days to play at The Tire Rack?

    A really surprising result!

Also, were Hoosiers chosen for the availability in various sizes?

As long as they were all on the same R compound the comparison should still be valid, although the MX5 and Solstice can't possibly have had any tuning done compared to Chris's 99. I expect the 99 won, but I'd like to know how the other 2 fared.

MX-5 vs 99 Miata vs Solstice

It'll be in the Feb issue...If I can get it written in time. (that's the next one, you should have Dec. now)

It was on the extended course that we used for the tire test, complete with the same bunch of extra offsets (which really affected these particular results btw) and we used the Hoosiers as they were on our benchmark when it was first and second on the North course (in the dry) in CS.

We actually had time to tweak the alignment on all of the cars and play around with pressures.

Based on that teaser, I'm going to go out on a limb and bet on the Solstice as the winner. I've been saying for awhile that it could be the dark horse of C Stock in '06 thanks to the ability to run huge rubber.

What do I win for the first correct guess? My GRM subscription has recently lapsed, so I'll take a free year or two... :D

If only all car mags would do these kinds of comparos... much more useful information would be gleaned from the results. Since you were able to tweak the alignments on the cars, were you able to establish what kind of adjustment capability was possible with each platform? Will you be furnishing that information in the article?

Or if Chris' car goes up for sale.  :)

We have had an 06' MX5 factory car, magazine project car now, show up at our local events. imho it is to far off the pace to knock the 99' of the top spot in CS.

Given this hint that suggests transitions played a big role in the outcome, I'm gonna guess the "suprise" is that the 99 miata was able to hold off the larger, wider, newer challengers.

Yeah I'd have to agree with Gary on this one. I believe it may take a year or two for the newer models to catch up and be at the top with the 99s.
