Re: Best Cars For 2008 Stock Classes

Curt Ormistan drove Dan Spaulding's 360 in 2000 to several wins on the west coast in SS.  After lots of aurguments, they were informed that if they took the car to Nationals they would be protested and not allowed to run.  The car was not officially classed in SS, they were running under the catch all.  They tried vainly to get production and US sales info, but Ferrari takes the month of August off...

Since he couldn't take the Ferrari, Dan bought a C5 about 3 weeks before Nats, dialed it in and Curt won SS, ending the reign of the RX-7...

In 2001 they campaigned the 360 in ASP,  (just putting wider wheels on it, from the SS legal setup) Curt was second at nats by just over a tenth, in a one day final.

I know Dan ran a 355 locally, but I don't think he went to national events until he got the 360.  (Nice to have discretionary income)

My recollections from early in my career...  You tend to pay attention to folks playing with Ferrari's at local events.

I think a 360 would make a great ASP car...although cutting the fenders might be somewhat traumatic...Wink

Agreed! But a 355 couldn't possibly be an overdog in SS! The stats on it are not really that good, there are plenty of them around and the price is about the same as a new Vette, or a used GT3!

Re: Best Cars For 2008 Stock Classes

When are the 2008 car classes/elligibilities released?

(any chance the e46 M3 will get moved down from AS Stick out tongue - actually, I just hope they open it up for a street tire class like STU.)

That ship sailed at the end of last year. You need to write a letter, and get a bunch of other people to write letters if you want to have a chance at getting it moved. IMO they won't take it out of AS, and definitely won't make it legal for STU.  But, you never know until you write a letter.

I would think that if we stay at the current site, it'll require a better power:weight than the E46 M3 to beat the AWD cars, considering they can't put it down nearly as well, especially with street tires.

True, and the E46 M3 is not even elligible for STU where the WRX STi and Evos often run - its not elligible in any street tire class for some reason. Is it a horsepower thing?

As for E46 M3 in STU, the SEB/STAC have gotten several letters on this the past two years, and each time tabled the issue (not rejected) to see how STU played out in its first couple of years as a national class.  I can imagine it getting legitimately considered now that their is clear dominance of a single vehicle type (StEVo).  Not a topic for this thread on Stock classing, but not necessarily a bad idea and probably worth at least considering.  As was suggested, write the letter if you want it considered.

Hmmm...maybe I'll start a thread on this one.

Edit: New thread here: E46 M3 in STU.

Way overpriced.  I've seen them go for $36-37k with low miles.

Also, no reason whatsoever to get the 550.  Waste of money for a stock-class autocrosser.  You get a couple extra horsepower, but it's all up high, and you'll never notice it.  Same wheels and same (M030) suspension as you can get on a regular Boxster S.

Anyway, Alan, you already figured out that the Porsche to have is probably the 987 Cayman or Boxster... Only a bit heavier than the 986S, wider front wheels, similar horsepower to the 986 S... don't know how I'm gonna keep up with ya next year with my underdog car.  Stick out tongue

I thought the 550 or whatever it's called had shorter springs? Is the spring rate the same, though?

Also comes with a 5mm spacer on all 4 wheels. So the track can legally be widened ANOTHER 1/4" per wheel over that :)

I believe it also rides lower as well yes :)

I also remember the 03-04 having more power than out 00-02 models as well John :)

I know of one VERY fast Boxster driver on the east coast with one of these ;)

Re: Anyone interested in a 2004 Boxster S SE?

The 550 came standard with the M030 sport suspension option. The sport suspension does indeed ride lower than the standard suspension, but it was available as a standalone option on non-550 Boxsters, so the 550 has no advantage on that front. As Dave pointed out, though, it does have additional wheel spacers, a little more power, and a short shift kit. None of those justify the car's price premium for autocross purposes, in my opinion.

But you buy the car because it looks damn good and just happens to probably be 0.1 faster than any other S model LOL  :)  More the looks good part than anything. :)

Besides PCA national probably has a class just for the 550 ed. ;)

Re: Anyone interested in a 2004 Boxster S SE?

I don't think the US M030 is actually any lower than the standard US suspension.  If it is, it's by a very slight amount, maybe a couple mm.  If you look at the specs in the manual it specifies the same ride height for 030 and non-030 US Boxsters.

There was a rumor going around a while back that the 550 came with the RoW 030 suspension but it wasn't true unfortunately.

Not sure conversation about the Boxster belongs in a "best cars for 2008 stock classes" thread.  :-(

Yeah, now that I think about it, you're correct on both counts.  Smile

Edit: But the 550 did come with the M030 -- I suspect the thing about it being lower came from the literature for the European versions of the car.

Re: Best Cars For 2008 Stock Classes

So early on in this, and other threads, there was alot of discussion about the S2000 CR in AS.  But it seems like once it was classed it has gone silent.  Whats the deal?  I didn't see one in the results from the 1st Tour so no data point there.  What about regionally?  Anybody know of any relevant regional results?
