Who's used the Hankook Z214??

    Hey Phil,

    Have you flipped your Z214's yet? Do you think you'll get to 120 runs w/ or w/o flipping?

    I'm guessing 120 or so without flipping. I'm maybe 2/3 of the way through the rubber on the shoulder at 75 runs. If I flip them I could drive them to Topeka and back. Again, this is a Miata - V710s turn to rocks before they cord on these things. All in all, they look to be wearing pretty much like a V710.

    I found they take the heat pretty well, and I never spray. On a heavy car that can be great at a Pro. 

     Really, I've been watering them and haven't tried otherwise. Do they do better with more heat in them???

     I've been pretty happy with these tires, but I still haven't run against anybody with new 710s.  One thing that I remember from the GRM R-comp comparison was that they found the Hankooks had less grip under braking and acceleration.  I'm happy with the braking, but I'm coming from a CSP Miata without ABS.  I did notice that they spun a lot on launches and that I could work the rear end of the car pretty easily with my right foot (which I really like).  I'd heard that the RX-8 wasn't too easy to rotate with power oversteer on 710s. 

    It'll be great if I get wear like Phil on these tires.  Only time will tell.

    I'm also very interested to see how good the C71 compound is.

    I asked a rep from Hankook on when it would be best to water the tires, and he suggested not to until it reaches 150F at the end of the run. So, after listening to this advice and bumping up the front tire pressure, I'm starting to really like these tires.

    I'll be running 3 drivers at the ProSolo this weekend at Salt Lake City on a sticker set of C7 compound tires.....that will be 27 plus potentially a Ladies Challenge, Super Challenge, and Boner Challenge.  We'll see how they hold up without flipping on the super-negative-camber-challenged Subaru.  We will definitely swap front-to-rear throughout each day depending on the schedule, and be taking tire temperatures and comparing the data, as we will have a little bit more time with the single-course format.

     I am bringing 4 x C7  and 2 x C5 to Nationals/Pro Finale, also sticker or just scrubbed, to ensure that fresh tires are available.  I am also bringing a set of Z212 street tires to act as Rains, we were still pulling over 1g continuously in an HS car in full deluge at Atwater earlier this year, even on that tire with many many many street miles and heat cycles.

    All you can get out of the Hankook is 1g in your car?  That sounds low seeing that I get 1.22 in my Civic on 710's.

    I have between +0.2-0.0 camber front in my car so I know your pain.

     

    They picked Jack to win with you and some guy named Hurst who isn't even registered in HS as of yet and I have never heard of picked to be close.  Pretty short blurb.

    Sweet!  That was one of my goals this year, getting into SportsCar...beats losing 20lbs any day Smile  No pics, eh?  I still haven't gotten the last issue of GRM, they have a terrible time sending me magazines within a 3 month window.  I'll look for it when I get home, lots of work to do before packing up in a few hours for the SLC ProSolo Single Curse (correct spelling) Format.

    Interesting - at the SLC Pro Solo, the top 4 of 5 competitors in HS were all on Hankooks. James, I'd be interested in hearing your event wrap-up/report. How did the tires hold up to having two co-drivers in HS and a third driver in HSL?

    I recently bought a lightly used set of C51 Z214's which should be arriving tomorrow. They'll be mounted this weekend and I'll see how I like them over the rest of the season. If they grip well and are durable on my camber-challenged 2.5L WRX, I'll be buying at least 2 new sets of C7's in the '08 season.

    My thoughts on the Hankook Z214's -- [Disclaimer: I have not run A6's or V710's on my car]

    Previously I've competed on RA-1's, and most recently a lightly used set of Hoosier R5's. I've driven different cars (e.g. S2000) that have been on fresh A6's and V710's. Of the two previous tires I've had on my personal car, the Hoosier R5's were by far the grippiest (especially once warm). My biggest complaint with the R5's AND the fresh A6's on the S2000 I drove, was the inability to sense when the tires' grip was about to give away. It was like grip...grip...SLIDE!!!

    After seeing James' success with the Z214's, I recently decided to buy a lightly used set of 245/40/17 C51 Z214's to use at local autocross events for the rest of the '07 season. I bought this set used as I was concerned with whether the stiff Z214 sidewalls would make it next to impossible to mount on my stock 17x7" rims (my tire guy threw nothing at me--so I *guess* they weren't too bad to mount up!Stick out tongue ).

    So far, I've had a chance to race them at an autocross event in light rain, as well as at a 2-day event in hot 90-95 degree temps.

    In the rain, the Z214's felt very grippy and predictable as my car approached the limits of adhesion. I could always sense when the limits of grip were reached and it was easier to drive my car at that limit through transitions (slaloms, offset gates, etc).

    In the dry, the grip of these tires amazed me. Not quite as good as a fresh A6/V710 but pretty darn close. Again they were very predictable at the limit, and inspired me to push my car harder and harder through fast transitional elements (60+mph offset gates). I definitely plan on buying at least two sets of new C7's next season!

    Well, I finally got the Kumho contingency check (thanks Kumho!) and went right out and bought the 'kooks the next day! Frisby tire jerked me around on availability and never returned my phone calls so I ended up going to The Tire Shoppe (dot com). These guys made the sale enjoyable, and as luck would have it....my tires were on a support truck at a track an hour from me. I got them mounted up (~for free~ I might add) last week and ran them at BeaveRun in a Steel Cities Region T&T yesterday.

    Initial thoughts are WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER??? I say that because I'm not good enough or consistantly good enough to know if a tire is a tenth quicker or slower. What I felt in the tire was the same grip I usually feel in a sticker set of 710s and the transitional response of the A3 Hoosiers...yeah, the A3S03's. Now I did have slightly more wheelspin on launching (which for sake of discussion is an AWD car in FSP) but I've made some other changes that would contribute to that. I didn't notice them any more prone to locking up under braking unless I got greedy (just like the 710s). The size being that of the Hoosier was immediately noticable in accelleration as the car dug it's way out of the corners with more authority. I could fell the diffs working for once, which ironically showed me an area of the suspension I need to work on that previously wasn't a problem. They never felt greasy even after 4-5 runs back to back with no spraying or even touching the pressures. I did feel my fastest runs were the 2nd of each session I went out on....that could be attributed to other things as well...remember, I am Mr. INconsistancy.

    The tires I got are of the C70 compound. I don't know if the C71 or C7 (whatever they call it now) is any faster....but the C70's are just as fast as the V710's in my mid-pack, never trophied in BMWSP opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

    I don't mean to be a party pooper, but subjective, seat of the pants testing proves nothing.  Back-to-back testing against other tire models, preferably data logged, does provide some data points, but even that doesn't prove anything since different tires may work better with different cars, setups, and driving styles.
