    Toyota problems

I'm surprized this hasn't been posted yet

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704905604575027671658649384.html?mod=WSJ_hps_LEFTWhatsNews

So what's this imply safety wise for those racing the models listed?

    Re: Toyota problems

I don't know of anyone racing a Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander or Tundra but if they are Solo requires the removal of the drivers floor mat and I have yet to see and car in club racing with floor mats.

Side note: there is not a car in the world that will not come to a complete stop when "working" brakes are applied, even at WOT.

    That's NOT true

I could break my rear tires loose on my 130hp Fleetwood

But could the rear tires get enough traction to force the front tires to roll against full brake pressure?

Great article in the March 2010 Car and Driver on the subject.  Long story short:  A 2009 Camry V6 with 268 hp takes 174' to stop from 70 mph with the throttle closed, 190' to stop from 70 mph at WOT.  Even a Roush stage3 Mustang can be brought to a stop from 70 mph in 246' while the throttle is floored, despite 540 horsepower working against the brakes in addition to the kinetic energy of the car.

I think they just announced a fix and are awaiting approval.

Especially considering pretty much every car in the world has some sort of transmission that allows you to either disengage the clutch or put it into neutral.

Sorry but it is when FULL braking pressure is applied (I doubt you were) any car INCLUDING 650+ horsepower race cars will stop

I'll buy that. BUT, you weren't accelerating "out of control at over a hundred mph", I daresay.

    Re: Toyota problems

Has anybody here had this problem with their Toyotaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....

sorry the "A" key stuck on my keyboard.

A lady I work with had it once on her prius. sound more like it hung up a bit and returned to 0% throttle a few seconds later.

    Re: Toyota problems

Hopefully this issue doesn't propel legislation or NTHSA rules-making whereby a brake override system becomes mandatory. That's the system/electronics whereby when the brake and gas pedals are simultaneously pressed, the electronic signal to the throttle is totally cut. Say goodbye to blending throttle and brakes under left foot braking scenarios.

By the way, Mark, I assume that you're aware that this is beyond the floor mat issue? It's the sticking throttle/CTS supplied pedal module issue.

    Re: Toyota problems

I've been a "Victim" of Unintended Acceleration in a Hyundai Accent - just a few weeks ago.

I was pulling into my parking space at work one morning, put my foot on the brake to stop - and the car surged-ahead to the curb-stop. As I pressed harder on the brake, the engine revved louder and louder, straining with every one of its 94hp against my efforts to rein them in.........

Turns out, as I was mashin' the brake pedal - the very edge of my Fat Foot was clipping the gas. As there is almost no "springback" to the pedals on cars these days, it just sorta "came along for the ride". So, I switched-off the car.

I point this out, as I was ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I wasn't "on the gas" by accident, as a few of these drivers have claimed. It startled me, and I felt really stupid when the realization hit me.

The Deaths of these people in these cars are tragic, and I am not by any means belittling them or the loss their families feel. But a person is responsible for their own destiny - the situation where the four people were killed in the Lexus was completely preventable: by the Driver. When a person panics and essentially throws his hands up and lets fate decide............. it WILL be decided, and the people affected won't like that decision.

Do these cars have active handling?

in that case it's all linked in together

kind of has me worried about the truck

    Re: Toyota problems

That particular case is interesting as the driver was a 19 year veteran of the California Highway Patrol.  You would think that a trained driver would have a some point simply put the car in neutral.
