Noob to the forum. newish to auto x. questions on civic si
Hello. The name is pat. im in the Indy region. number is 77ST. some of you locals might have seen my 4dr around or on the track eating cones. I just recently picked up a 90 si... MAN, have i got some questions. ive searched around, read up as much as i can. im not really looking to beat the national guys or anything like that. it would be nice to have a quick car, that when the NT stops by indy, i can at least be within 15 seconds of the big guys(not 30). setup will be::: PIC select coilovers (i have pic's on the 4dr and LOVE them) Skunk 2 UCA front and rear
DC header (freebie) CAI 2 1/2" to a dump in front of the LCA tires- i already have the 195/50/15 re-01r on stock integra mesh wheels. (pink/purpleish. lol) now. on a national level. is it a MUST to have the sport konis, CG sleeves and swap out springs per event? anyone else had any luck with other setups? what are the big boys running? what are the local guys running? thanks in advance
also to note:: this will be a daily mostly (when the gf has the 4dr) and auto x otherwise. i DID buy an si for auto x purposes. that, and the 4dr is a fat, underpowered, pushing pig.

http://redshiftmotorsports.com/RedShift%20Tech%20Page.htm Everything you need to get "started" as an ST competitor. This is like the beginners kit. Once you get going and drive more in the car, you will then realize what you "need" instead of want. BTW, the upper control arms for the EF slip very easily under an autox environment. If you intend to use them, i would strongly suggest removing the coated paint and use different bolts to lock down the balljoint.

eurobeaner:yep. thats the main page ive gathered info off of. great site. thanks though
If you have read that site, then I am curious as to why you want the PIC coilover? Don't waste your money. Go straight to the Koni setup. Personally, I am not so much a fan of the GC coilover as the Koni sleeves. The latter are convertible as to spring id (2.25 or 2.5) which allows you to buy used springs easier. And used RACE-valved Konis are popping up more and more due to the national lemmings all buying hi-zoot shocks this year. Worst case, you can get by with a set of the standard-valved yellow Koni, so long as you keep your springs below 550 or so. Springs/shocks, rear bar, tires and you will be plenty competitive, so long as your driving is decent. I/E/H can be sourced cheap off EBay and/or fabbed. Nothing fancy there. And keep up with the maintenance. After all, it is a 20-year old car.

Re: Noob to the forum. newish to auto x. questions on civic si
Well... mainly, like i said, it will be driven daily. i have pic's on the other car. ride quality is spot on. and ive won both local events ive been in, (this means nothing to the national level) and my car is nowhere NEAR being close to ST prepped (no rear sway, not even stock, idk the alignment, stock header, stock exhaust) im just weary about the konis on a daily. i had koni/gc setup on my 95 hatch i sold, on 465 they made me and the gf want to puke with how rough it was. semi's ruin that road. i also didnt know if anyone had tried them, and that was a question of mine. i figured it was worth a shot. $1200 for the dampening adjustable ones, and they do alot of track testing. in 3 years, if i feel that thats a limiting factor, i can buy the konis. at least that was my plan. because if no-one has really tried them, ill give them a shot. im not trying to be different, just getting my main problem with my old hatch fixed. puking daily on the way to work isnt fun. lol
and thanks for the info mr andy.

Re: Noob to the forum. newish to auto x. questions on civic si
your comfort level is really a personal thing, but it really comes down to what spring rates you choose. i wouldnt go anything over 450 in the back of a daily driven car...and that might already be too high for some people. but for the price i dont think anything competes with konis and ground controls. also a bigger sway bar is a must with these cars, the suspension technique one can be had for under 200 bucks. also a lighter and wider wheel will really make a difference on those tires.
i think that the best thing i did with my car was just replace all the old crap, bushings, brake lines, pads, rotors, all fluids, refresh the motor, etc. its like a new problem free car.

Welcome to ST.........from what I have noticed in 6 months there is no one way to be fast. I did my car on an extreme budget and in 4 events the car is very fast and the driver needs to learn how to drive. Used parts are very plentiful right now and if you have the funds you can find killer deals. For the most part everyone on here is very helpfull. I see your planning on running an LCA exhaust. I have a used redshift LCA that pretty much like new if your interested.

Dude, you've been bringing the heat in your 4 door with the roof rack at the local events as a novice. I'm guessing that with the hatch and a year of events under your belt, you'll be ready to start running with the big boys.
Talk with Will, Brian and myself at the August 2nd Indy event at Peru. We'll be glad to help you along.
BTW, get the Konis.

What's up Pat. I can't wait to see how you do with a real prepared car.
Probably will end up kicking my butt. If you want to focus on autocross
I'd get the konis. I know it might be uncomfortable, I drive my car on
the street most of the time and yeah it's not comfortable, but I
manage. However there's a reason everyone uses them. Good luck man, I'm
sure as Geoff said we'll see you at the next indy event.

Oh hai Pat. Glad to see most everyone is telling you the same thing I have already. Or you could just give that car to me and I will show you how to set it up, instead of just telling you. lol So when you stepping up to the X class in Indy?

I think that is due to your stiff springs not the coilovers. My koni's (GC) are pretty comfortable... but I run a car twice as heavy with half the spring rate. I suspect it is a tough order to truly prep an ST car and keep it comfortable for daily driving. Probably gotta go to STX or STU for that. You will have to find a compromise - but I too agree that konis are a good choice. You will just need to get the right spring rates for your compromise.
Look forward to seeing the new car, Pat. Should be a nice upgrade for cone-dodging.

Re: Noob to the forum. newish to auto x. questions on civic si
Thanks mr chambers. i HAD to get a si, the solstice in novice class is KILLIN me in PAX. i gotta get some speed! and that 4dr is a PIG... put it this way... 2600 lbs, no rear sway bar, stock 105hp engine, 2 FREEKIN CATS in the exhaust (only suppost to have 1... but i have the 99 header with cat in it, plus the 96 exhaust with the cat in it.... horrible) that thing pushes. actually. idk how anyone couldnt drive it well. i mean, turn the wheel, it goes strait, smash the gas and hope for the best. lol. that was my technique. i cant wait to feel what this "tail happy" thing is Sup mr shahab?! dude... im gonna be bad for a bit. anything that dont push will be a world of change from the 4dr. you get that exhaust idea figured out? i MIGHT do something like that... though, ive never had a HORRIBLE loud car yet. i may try it out for awhile lol. Will... you pay for the setup ill give it to you... to codrive lol. might wanna stick with brians though. its 50ish lbs lighter. im trying to get some stuff togeather. might have a ST rear bar already, if the guy gets back with me. and mr nebulizer, what is your name? i parked next to you at grid one event, and talked for a min. dont remember your name. and hopefully itl be an upgrade.(its ugly orange)but NOW i can learn to drive.
current project in works: header install, new axles, ball joints, calipers, pads, rotors, outer tie rods. HOPEFULLY ill have some sort of strut/spring thats not stock on by aug 2nd.

Re: Noob to the forum. newish to auto x. questions on civic si
It's the shocks Jason, trust me. If I had a couple grand to put towards shocks it would be riding a lot better even with stiffer springs. Ask me how I know. lol To answer Pat's question we did get the exhaust going and it's working great. Nice and quiet driving to events takes about a minute to swap the exhaust by myself, around 30 seconds if i have someone hold it up for me. Get the free flow and cool weed whacker miata noise for racing, then nice and quiet when not racing.
