This was an event, how they got insurance is beyond me.  This is what can happen when a parts company runs an autox

Re: pics of the most unsafe event ever

I've participated in one of the Goodguys autocrosses before.  Most events are open only to 1972 and earlier vehicles, so it's typically a bunch of muscle cars and always on street tires.  I ran a 57 T-Bird.  They're sponsored by Air Ride Technologies  and generally put on with the assistance of the local SCCA chapter (though I can't say for sure that was the case for this particular event) but do not typically follow SCCA guidelines for helmets, distance to obstacles, etc.  I felt the one I participated in at the Titans' Stadium in Nashville was plenty safe:  speeds were very, very low, but no, I doubt it would have passed a safety steward inspection.  At any rate I definitely don't condone letting that Excursion run.

Not that it makes the event any more safe, but that Nova belongs to the event sponsor, not an average Joe participant.  So no lawsuit at least.

Re: pics of the most unsafe event ever

To be clear, although this event was held in San Francisco Region "Territory" (Pleasanton is an East Bay suburb in the SF Bay Area), SFR SCCA sure had nothing to do with putting on this event!

A few of "our" people did run in the event.   Mary Pozzi (2008 FSL National Champ, which was far from her first National Championship Wink ) set FTD in her 73 Camaro "CP" car (think really more an ESP-like prep on it).

I notice that for unannounced reasons the Nashville SCCA bunch ended up not participating at last weekend's Goodguys Nashville event though they had been scheduled to do so.  I'd be interested to know the story there.

Re: pics of the most unsafe event ever

These boobs in the Excursion get to fool around like this? Who signed-off on this, and what would they say if this passenger got a face-full of mirror if a suspension part fails and the rig falls over? I guess I'm confused, but I sure hope no one in SCCA had anything to do with organization. Stupidest thing I've ever seen.

Not that it excuses several other safety problems, but the Excursion isn't one of them. It's not going around at speed. The wheel is lifted by the airbag suspension, not by cornering force.

With all due respect, it has everything to do with cornering force, because I doubt the guy hanging out the door of this 7000+lb truck is the cause of the lifted wheel. It's still a dumb idea.

The thread specifically says it's not going fast and that he lifted the wheel with the airbag suspension just to go around the course on 3 wheels the whole time.  Please don't correct others when you're too busy to read a link yourself.

No story there.  Good Guys has been moving towards being self sufficient with the events for the past year.  They now own all their own equipment and bring in work internally.  I really can't explain why they let that happen.  In the past 3 years they have seen SCCA member turn away vehicles at tech for much less.  Oh well, to each their own.  At least its not SCCA sanctioned.

Re: pics of the most unsafe event ever

While not SCCA sanctioned, it gets lumped together with SCCA Solo events by the casual observer.

Any incident at their event has a great potential of impacting SCCA Solo events and site acquistion/usage.

We are dealing with just this type of stigma thanks to NASA drifting events at one of our venues.
