I signed up for the 18th class a few weeks ago.  What I did not know I was going to do was get rid of my EP and get a 08 WRX today.  The car is still brand new.  It is a left over from last year.  I was able to work out a great deal for it to make up for the 08's having less HP.  Now I am 2nd guessing taking the class or doing a lot of racing this year.  I know I have to take it easy for the first 1K on the car.  But after that I am not sure what to do.  Should I be safe driving this new of a car on a track? 

If you're concerned about the break-in period on the car, I certainly wouldn't call autocross "taking it easy."  That said, I know people who have driven cars right off the lot, slapped on Hoosiers, and started throwing the car around an autocross course.

There's nothing wrong with a new car when it comes to autocross, but as far as your break-in-period, maybe you should go on a couple road trips first.

i know of someone with an sti who drove the break in miles the weekend before the cars first event... just so he could auto-x it!

I'll be happy if the rebuilt motor we're running has 100 miles on it before it's first event.  I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's still under warranty!

You'll love the '08 WRX and you'll have a great group to run with even if you do nothing more than leave it bone stock and show up to the first event in street tires. Last year's winner in Front Index was exactly your car, 2nd was your car's previous generation, 3rd was a subaru legacy, 4th was the same previous gen WRX, and Stone did very well in your exact car (but not enough events to place for season points).

Put 1000 gentle miles on, change the oil, bring it out. We'd love to have ya.

I did the Evo school in mine last year with only about 3000 miles on the car.

 

...and yes, the RE92's were still on it. I would suggest replacing those if at all possible.

Thanks,  I found  a local Subaru group and they are having a meet next weekend in WI.  I am driving this car around as much as I can.  In just to last 4 days I have put over 200 miles on it.  I think I will be good. 

 Just wondering I want to make sure of something.  Can I swap out the front sway bar and still run the stock class?  On the Subaru forums I got told that will help me turn better and get rid of some some of that body role I do not like.  I thought I could only change the front if I wanted to stay in the stock class.

Yes, you can change the front sway bar. If you haven't yet I would suggest spending money on better tires than the RE-92s before you spend money on a sway bar.

Thanks,  yea I still have the stock tires.  I know I can not afford a new set all around by april.  Maybe in May.  That is a maybe.  I need to price out tires to see what I can afford.  I would like to keep the stock tires for winter and get a good set of sports tires. 

Or you could watch on the Subaru forums for a used set of stock STI tires the RE070's for about $150-250 bucks they are great budget autocross tires.

Thanks.  BSTON stated the same tires.  I will have to look around I might be able to pull them off at that price.  Might not be able to do it before Arpil but a lot better chance in May.  I refuse to use a credit card for any add ons to a car. 

To stay in the stock class I have to stick with 205 right?  Looking at tire rack they did not have 205's and I thought the STI had a wider tire.  I would like to be competative but if I need a wider tire to run better then that is what I will have to do if I can stay competative in a class.

You can run any tire size as long as it fit's on the factory sized wheel if you are running a stock index tire width and profile is not limited. My tires I will be running on my 08 STI are 285-35-18 on the stock wheels. 

 

Actually just got a call from Pinkertonpunk aka Colin F, he has a set of RE070's that he will part with for $150, they are 225-45-17.
